Angsty Electric Cello for the win!!
Because I think they're great.. so nyeerrr!! ;) .. and you've just got to love live music with angsty electric cello.. They're playing an EP pre-launch show this Wednesday at Proud Galleries.. I shall endeavour to be there (unless I'm already promised elsewhere.. which I don't think is the case). | | Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 | | 11:26 am |
Long overdue updaterty
Yesterday evening began being made of fail after I was late leaving work and even later getting home due to road closures on the A406. This resulted in me being far too late to get down to Shoreditch for the Romance gig (supported by the impossibly named band.. something along the lines of Dananananakroyd.. who I recall being pretty good when I saw them at Artrocker last year). I guess given that I still don't have any promo material for the new album, the gig wouldn't have been as useful to me as I'd hoped.. but I was rather looking forward to the bands. Maybe it's Divine intervention telling me I'm going out far too much on School nights (Brave Exhibitions on Sunday did somewhat wipe me out.. although that may also be down to post-gig thingies)? I decided to try and salvage the evening by doing some much needed webwork and promotion for the band.. thereby salvaging at least some of the night :) This leaves me with three things remaining that need saying... 1. Happy Birthday to ant_girl, by far the most attractive, dynamic, intelligent, hard-working and talented girl we have in SBA ;) 2. Watched Clint Eastwood's new film, "Gran Torino", before Brave Exhibitions last Sunday.. and I must say I was rather impressed. Apart from a couple of clonking and unnecessary minor continuity errors, the story and theme (although not incredibly original) really draws you in.. tragic anti-hero in moral tale with somewhat unexpected twist at the ending scandal.. just my cup of intellectual Tea :) 3. As if you already don't know.. SUGAR is now available for sale.. and it's by far the best piece of work we've come up with so far!! Buy it from us, buy it from Resurrection or buy it from Music Non Stop.. I don't care.. just BUY IT!! ;) | | Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 | | 5:21 pm |

Yesterday was KASMS and The Horrors new album. Today I am listening to the first Horrors offering... Blimey, it's all rather good.. I can feel my jeans tightening as I write this. ;) Current Music: Sheena Is A Parasite - The Horrors | | 10:34 am |

48 Hours...
.. or so until I'm soundchecking for the SBA Launch gig.. | | 1:51 pm |
This is not a Goth song...
Technically, I was supposed to be preparing outfits for Friday's launch gig tonight (tomorrow evening will be spent travelling up North).. but it looks like I can't get my hands on the materials I need anyway. So I've decided to hit the town and catch Bethia Beadman's electro-acoustic performance at the Slaughtered Lamb (Great Sutton St, Clerkenwell, London) tonight. She's been guesting with the Arrows Of Love on backing vocals and keys.. but it turns out she's got quite an interesting project all of her own, including a Courtney Love connection. Anyway, I'm rather impressed with some of her MySpace tracks.. so I'm heading down to check out the act. According to the interweb, doors at at 7:45pm and she's the second act on.. so I'll be heading down there for 8:45pm. Consider this an invitation to one and all to join me, if you're not too old to do a school night.. :) Warning.. there could be folk music!!! ;) http://www.myspace.com/bethiabeadmanHere's one of her videos, courtesy of YouTube.. I'm rather enjoying my Shiny new KASMS album, ' Spayed'. Abbey Road have done a good job of capturing all the things that make KASMS such a great live sound, whilst smoothing over some of the raw jagged bits that work well live, but might otherwise make the album too much of a challenge. It reminds me vaguely of early experimental Siouxse and The Banshees (or perhaps some of the better Creatures tracks).. this has to be one of their influences.. but it's also quite uniquely KASMS... they have a very interesting and different sound all of their own. "Don't hit the bottom" has some serious overtones of the Banshees track "The Staircase". Currently being amused by Rachel's pronunciation on one of the tracks, "There are INSACTS, pouring in my bathtub!" Priceless :) | | Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 | | 11:48 am |
77 Hours..
.. or so and I'll be soundchecking in Leeds for our album launch gig.. You can tell I'm really digging this day job thing, can't you? ;) | | Sunday, June 28th, 2009 | | 11:19 pm |
Just back from York in time to wish viciouscabaret a very happy Birthday! Hope you have the best 40 minutes remaining of your big day that you've ever had... :) | | Saturday, June 27th, 2009 | | 12:29 pm |
Big Brother!!
I've been studiously avoiding Big Brother this time around.. but I'm a bit bored at my parentals house so I've got it on as I write.. From what I can gather, they're about to vote out the intelligent (albeit a manipulative and tactless) guy who wants to be a politician.. sounds typical.. vote out anyone with intelligence or who may not be "being themselves" (ie. shouting a lot and being stupid and offensive).. but it should put him on the right road to being unpopular enough to get into politics[1]. Another observation.. at what point did Wolverine turn into caveynik? I may have to watch just a little more ;) Wolverine caveynik to win!!! [1] This is all based upon about 10 minutes of watching.. and is a repeat from last night, so I may very well be wrong.. ooh the suspense!EDIT: Aha.. so they ditched the crazy foreign woman instead... | | 12:28 am |
Rather bored tonight.. according to Virgin 1, I should be texting babes (all of which seem rather keen to talk to me.. and rather blonde.. one is even texting from the bath, which is quite dedicated if you ask me) or be playing online poker in a virtual cyber happy winning land. I think I may just have a shower and go to bed.. ;) | | Friday, June 26th, 2009 | | 10:47 am |
A rather strange radio morning today.. My car digital radio has 3 banks of 8 channels.. and needs re-autotuning each time I start the car. The radio scans for channels and then plays about 5 seconds of each so you know what it's found. It was kindof surreal having almost every channel found playing a Michael Jackson song.. at the same time.. with the exception of good old Radio 4 and some dance music channel (which may actually have been playing a dance remix of a Michael Jackson song.. but I didn't get enough preview to positively ID it). I guess this is a subject that will dominate the media for a while.. more excuse for every nut-job and Uri Gellar (who just gets more irritating every time I hear him) to get their 10 minutes of fame. Time for grand media hypocracy as they try to package their Saint, pehaps Elton John will even release a song? | | Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | | 10:27 am |
Just a quickie to say that The Arrows Of Love were utterly awesome at the Hoxton Bar And Kitchen last night.. and had me dancing like a loon by the end of the set.. a good night all round :) I have dodgy footage from the gig, which will no doubt sound aweful.. but I shall nevertheless upload this evening :) Contrary to what their names suggests, a lot of their material is wonderfully vicous and angsty.. this is one of my favourite of their live numbers (along with their fantastic cover of 'The Year 2525'), The Knife, which I suspect may have influenced at least one song on our new album. (the video is of their previous incarnation as "Hush The Many", but it's the same vibe.. although The Arrows Of Love have a more lively, less acoustic, rock and roll stage act :)) If you want to listen to "The Knife" properly, just pop over to the now defunct Hush The Many MySpace page where it's available on the playlist.. | | Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 | | 3:55 pm |
Arrows Of Love gig, tomorrow night.
Well, I was actually looking for somewhere to go tonight.. but as ' The Arrows Of Love' are playing The Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen with 'Defend Moscow' tomorrow night, I think I shall stay in tonight and attend that instead. In other news, ' Silhouette' will be headlining at The Fly, 36-38 New Oxford Street, London, WC1A 1EP on Friday (apparently with Arcs, New Street Adventure, Circus Electric, Lucy Jane). I'd be there, except I have to travel Northwards that evening.. but I'd thoroughly recommend you check them out if you like great live music :) | | Sunday, June 21st, 2009 | | 6:42 pm |
Selfish C*nt
Selfish Cunt Posted because, the more I see them.. the more I like them.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inz8phWjiis&feature=relatedOh.. and for all you peeps out there that think all Shoreditch bands are short-lived affairs by art-school kids.. here's a clip of SC from 2004 (to disprove the first statement, if not necessarily the latter ;)) Weekend and gig update sometime later.. am running late for the Joy Disaster gig.. | | Thursday, June 18th, 2009 | | 2:38 pm |
Performance Art
I caught this particular piece performed after the SCUM gig at the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen (which I rushed back from Whitby to catch) last October.. I seem to recall caveynik bailed out during the rather long intro featuring female human statues.. Apart from the rather boring intro, I actually quite enjoyed it at the end.. although there was altogether much more tinsel and glitter being thrown around at that particular show. It's terribly Glam rock tragedy.. methinks tukie might have missed out on his true calling? ;) | | Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 | | 11:43 am |
York Gig this Friday, information..
Just a reminder that you can see myself and the rest of Banshee Aircrew perform our album warm-up gig in York this Friday.... We're right at the bottom of the bill this time, so be sure to get there for 7:45pm if you want to catch us.. It's a flyer deal, so if you bring a copy of this flyer you'll not only be getting in cheaper.. you'll be increasing our own share of the payment for the night :) Also, stick around to see the other bands.. we're quite pleased to be on this lineup :) Hope to see some of you there? | | Monday, June 15th, 2009 | | 11:24 am |
Another Monday morning.. at least the sky isn't grey..
Not the best start to the week: 1. Despite being tired, spent all night worrying about various things too much to sleep. I think I may have got about 2 hours sleep in the end. 2. Traffic jam on the M1 while driving to work. Wonder what's next? :) | | Sunday, June 14th, 2009 | | 1:54 pm |
Since he started taking the horse steroids.. many of you may have noticed a gradual change in tukie's image over the past few months... and I think I've finally found the template he's using.. Veh Sheshy! Bonus points for spotting Orlando Bloom as Legolas playing guitar.. ;) | | Friday, June 12th, 2009 | | 3:23 pm |
Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump @ The Macbeth - tonight
Hi all, Just to inform you all that I shall once again be at the Macbeth Pub in London tonight. This time it will be to see ' An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump' (who SBA are supporting in a weeks time) supported by ' Not Cool' and the ' Speak And Spells' on the (apparently) final night of ' Ghost School'. £3 with flyer before 9:30pm £4 without flyer before 9:30pm £5 after 9:30pm Or.. (according to conflicting info elsewhere).. Free entry before 9pm £5 after So I shall be living dangerously and turning up for 8:45pm ;) (The info on the main Ghost School domain website seems to be incorrect in listing it for the 18th June.. but all the bands, Myspace and The Macbeth site confirm it is indeed tonight) Depending upon when the bands finish, I'm likely to be moving on to Zoomusic Club (free entry) afterwards.. Company would be very welcome, if any of you feels up to it :) | | 10:31 am |

It's been at least a month since I bigged up Silhouette.. so I thought I'd remedy this with a video :) Wish I was allowed to give video-big-face for SBA ;) | | 2:38 pm |

An update.. will wonders ever cease?
Okay.. I know you've all been waiting for this.. but I'll keep it brief because 'Stronghold' on the PC is calling me back for another go... Last weekend - Trip up to York to witness my little Sister being given away at the alter. This seems to have been literally the case as at no point did I witness money changing hands.. ;) Friday - Thanks to caveynik, I was on the guestlist to watch The Horrors playing at the Electric Ballroom. It's probably a good thing I was guestlisted, as it looked like the event may well have been a sell-out.. I don't think I've seen the Electric Ballroom so packed out. The show was pretty good, I think The Horrors are growing on me somehwat.. although I do still wonder at how many equivalent bands out there don't get the shots these guys seem to have had. It's always rather special being able to avoid the long queues and get let in through the back door by the doorman as a guest.. I could get used to that ;) After the gig they threw out all the punters quick-sharp and started the cleanup for Inferno. I managed to avoid being thrown out only to come right back in by being subtly hidden away behind the DJ stand with caveynik and natashameltdown, where I was subjected to a crash-course in DJ technical skills.. including the dreaded sound level cut-out bulb of doom (which Nik seemed to fall foul of minutes into his set). Inferno was.. Inferno.. I can just about handle it as long as I keep moving around and drinking like a fish.. but it's really not my cup of Tea at all. Still, you've got to remind yourself about these things every now and again :) Saturday - Woke up at mid-day and rushed to get to the band rehearsal at 2pm (thankfully in London this time). Quite a good rehearsal.. it's looking more hopeful that we'll be able to pull off a good warmup show on the 19th in York despite there only being the 4 of us remaining (still fully live.. but with yours truly unable to help out on the music front). Rehearsal finished at 6pm, so I trotted up to Angel to catch Romance's support slot at the Islington Academy.. and, my, were they on fire that night. Romance definately have star quality written all over them.. and they seem to be continually improving.. if you ever liked The Cult (including the ego ;)), then this is a band for you. Next band on were 'Ulterior', a very solid show with a bandana wearing frontman who looked vaguely 'Rawk'.. but sounded extremely 'Gawth'.. all you trads out there would love this band. At this point I decided to bail out of the gig and take the tube back to my place to fulfill an irresistable fish and chip craving. Then on to Big Red to meet up with green_badger and assorted reprobates. This is the point at which the weekend's excesses (and drink, probably) started catching up to me.. so I proceeded onwards to Dead And Buried in the hope that some drinking dancing might wake me up. Sadly, my cunning plan didn't work (even though I did get to have an embarrassing fan-boy chat with Specimen's Ollie Wisdom and Jon Klein).. I only managed an hour or so before I decided that bed was the place for me.. Today has mostly been noodling on the internet and playing old skool Duke Nukem 3D on the XBox.. For anyone interested in the whys and wherefores of the cancellation of today's SBA gig in London.. I suggest you go HERE for the full story. Oh, yes, don't forget... 19th June - SBA pre-launch warmup gig, supporting Bird On A Wire In The Airpump at The Duchess, York. 3rd July - SBA official launch our new album, 'Sugar' at The Subculture, Leeds, with Luxury Stranger bringing up the support. Okay.. so that wasn't as brief as anticipated ;) | | 8:08 pm |

I'm currently gripped by the fear that you only get when you realise you don't have your mobile phone with you at work and have to wait to get home before you can breathe a sigh of relief that you left it there.. or face the realisation that you've lost the bugger!! Pah! | | Thursday, June 4th, 2009 | | 4:12 pm |
Due to the curse of the internet.. I've been addicted to catching up on several series of "Lost". Having got to the start of series 5, I've got to say that all those cryptic and seemingly meaningless weird things that occur in the early series of "Lost" (and probably the main reason many people gave up on watching.. thinking it was as pointless as the "X-Files" plots) are brought together rather well in later episodes. Something of a case of (either by accident or design) scriptwriters being far too clever for their boots and losing audience before they get to the punch-lines. So, if you only got as far as Season 3 and then gave up on it... I'd definately recommend you give the series another go.. it does actually start making sense. Well, I'm rather enjoying it :) | | Monday, June 1st, 2009 | | 4:01 pm |

KASMS - 'Male Bonding' Video
Once again, not one of my favourite songs.. but this definately seeems to be the direction the band is taking now they seem to have a bit of backing and representation. Still, at least it's not all Goffick or nuffink, right? ;) | | 12:10 am |

I'm thinking of popping down to Brave Exhibitions tonight.. no idea about the bands.. but that's often part of the fun :) | | Monday, May 18th, 2009 | | 4:11 pm |
Due to having a life, of sorts.. and despising our entry into the contest (so what's new).. I seem to have succeeded in completely missed anything related to the Eurovision Joke Song Contest. However, they've just played the winner from this years competition on Radio 2.. and I must admit it's actually a rather good song. Much, much better than that self-obsessed whining cliche noise we foisted into the competition. So.. well done.. erm.. whoever you are.. | | Friday, May 15th, 2009 | | 5:46 pm |
Pleased to see that The Arrows Of Love will be playing at The Bufallo Bar this Wednesday.. methinks I shall pop along. Any other takers[1]? [1] If there are no comments to this, then I shall no doubt pretend that there was a clamour of interest.. but that I'd screened all comments to avoid any repurcussions to individuals Goth image.. or danger of punishment beatings from irate militant Goffick types as a result of attending a non-scene gig.. ;p | | 11:34 am |

Yesterday I finally got my hands on a 'Donor Kebab' flavour Pot Noodle.. Now I'm a big fan of Pot Noodles although don't generally allow myself to consume them for waistline reasons.. but every now and again you have to live dangerously. I must admit, this is the first Pot Noodle flavour that has simply left me disappointed.. it didn't really have much of a donor kebab flavour at all.. unless you drown yours in chillis. So, the crown Prince of Pot Noodles for me remains the rather yummy 'Lamb Hotpot'.. mmmmmm. In other news, Chris is currently with the guy Mastering our album... fingers crossed for no unexpected last minute fuckwittery.. as of tonight we should have the fully finished album tracks. Now it's just a case of getting the artwork finalised and getting it pressed in time for our launch gig.. which is an uncomfortably close-run thing.. | | Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 | | 10:39 am |
Last night I dreamt about buying ridiculously big calf length boots.. I'm sure it must be a message from God.. or some deep and meaningful message from my subconcious[1] [1] The two of which are, of course, interchangeable ;) | | 12:06 am |
And here's a song that gets me right down to the bones... I'm a lyrics guy. I like songs that sound good.. I like songs you can dance to.. but there's no substitute for a well crafted lyric, no matter how apparently simple. | | Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 | | 11:46 pm |
Every fibre of my being says that this song should simply not work live.. it contravenes so many of those unofficial rules of songwriting (well, the ones in my head.. at least ;)).. and yet somehow the Mercy Seat still works.. Someday I'd like to try and be a serious artist type like this.. | | Monday, May 4th, 2009 | | 8:00 pm |
I've just watched the Johnny Cash autobiography[1]on TV.. and now appear to be in floods of tears. I'm such a wet blanket sometimes.. Somehow, I don't think Star Trek TNG is going to have the same effect.. or at least, not for the same reasons ;) [1] Not the movie.. but a proper old fashioned documentary of his life.. | | Friday, May 1st, 2009 | | 5:56 pm |
Well, the SBA album Mastering should be completed by May 13th.. so we'll finally have the completely finished versions of all 13 album tracks in our grubby paws. Of course, there's still several weeks after that to get them pressed and ready for sale.. but at least things are moving and look good for our London launch gig. On an unrelated subject, while the entire Swine Flu thing is worrysome for everyone.. given that we may well be set for it's main appearance later in the year (or a media/government scare, failing that), this is likely to be rather crippling for live music. After all, how many people are going to opt to attend a sweaty damp gig packed full of other people in the midst of a Flu Pandemic? As SBA aren't really planning to hit the live scene hard until later in the year.. this could be something of a problem. I'd also suspect a good number of people may be cancelling their October Whitby plans (well, those that would still be going anyway). | | 2:26 pm |
Superficial ways to cheer yourself up..
Now, I'm usually the epitome of lightheartedness and joy.. my every utterance one of optimism and hope.. But for all your miserable sods out there, I thought I'd share one of my guaranteed ways to cheer yourself up a bit techniques.. 1. Every time you walk up or downstairs, do so in the style of Jim Carey's Velociraptor impression. This is almost 100% guaranteed to make you smile.. even if just a little. For added joy, try doing so whilst holding onto a steaming cup/mug of coffee.. Even better, for the bravest among you.. do any combination of the above in front of security cameras or other people.. as this will undoubtably cheer up everyone witnessing the spectacle. Does anyone else have any solid gold guaranteed techniques they'd like to share? | | 10:31 am |

Hi all! Here's some footage of what I missed at the Spa on Friday night, courtesy of sistercarrion.. Unfortunately, despite buying Spa tickets with the main intention of seeing The Last Dance, due to some epic last-minuteness it turned out that SBA were busy turning the acoustic night at the Metropole into a Pantomime at the same time TLD were playing the Spa.. so I missed their Friday night performance. Now, I know there are a few people on my friends list who aren't so keen on TLD.. a few for musical reasons, some because they aren't perfect people (who is?) and they do manage some epic faux-pas now and again.. and some taking the perceived rivalry with The Cruxshadows (and Jeff's tendency to tease them onstage) far too seriously. Personally speaking, although it's not really what I'm into anymore.. I love their music.. and I don't think they get the credit they deserve for being one of the leading exponents of that particular style. More importantly to me.. they also give great live shows and don't have any airs and pretensions about themselves.. they are a group of genuinely friendly and easy-going people.. and pleasure to work with.. and, unlike many other bands, what you see is what you get (warts and all). More than the music, it is this attitude I respect. I think the final few seconds of this video really sums up the character of the band for me. Now, if they'd only buck the trend and go fully live... ;) EDIT: Oh yes.. and if you're interested in what we were doing at the time.. here's a video courtesy of ayrton_nix.. Cool Ghoul Acoustic |
