    Review - Romance @ White Heat, Madame JoJo's 17/11/09
[First off, usual apologies about the poor sound capture of my phone video clips!]

Last Tuesday found me in the bowels of Soho to catch the Romance single launch at White Heat, entombed in the flowery underskirt of Madame JoJo's. The advertised live entertainment of the night was to begin with Widower and Oral Oral, who both looked like they may be interesting, and ending with Romance.. now that sounds like my idea of fun ;)

    Another Monday morning?
The sky is definately grey... and wet.. and cold..

A day beginning with the discovery that one of your car headlights has blown, followed by being over 1 hour late for work due to being sat in a traffic jam on the A1 in London for much of that time.. the omens do not look good.

Now, to try and fix Friday's code you've just been told has broken everything...

Shaping up to be an excellent day ;)

Tonight.. Nick Cave has left the building..
Tonight I shall be heading down to the Slaughtered Lamb (London) to see Australian band, Snowman, perform at The Gilden Palace Of Sin's album launch..

The last (and only) time I saw Snowman, I was really impressed.. and I must admit I'm rather curious about the headliners too.. they certainly sound interesting.

I guess that's to be expected as they are signed to a label set up by an ex-bad seed, Barry Adamson.

Doors are listed as 7pm.. although I certainly hope they're not on that early!

Whitby mostly sucked.. I may as well just have stayed at home for all but the Thursday night and Friday daytime.

Not that it gets better.. so far, this morning could hardly have been worse.. futher compounded by me getting stranded on the wrong side of the lights at a London Red-route box junction only days after paying off the last £60 fine for the same junction. I shall look forward to the smug and ominous letter through the post in the next few days demanding a further £60... assuming the post arrives at all (watch the fine pile up in the sorting office).

So, yes, today can go to hell.

And about time too.. now for all the other lying adverts that try to pass pseudo-science as fact.
Danone Actimel advert banned by the (usually ineffectual) Advertising Standards Agency for claiming to be "Scientifically proven to support your kids defences"

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20091014/tuk-yoghurt-advert-banned-over-health-cl-45dbed5.html

The source of their "scientific proof"...
"Danone said 23 people in a study group of 6,000 across different age ranges had shown health benefits after drinking Actimel... Some of the studies were carried out on sick children in hospitals in India and Russia."

Now, let's ban all the other blatantly inaccurate pseudo-science advertising and media (*cough* Doctor Gillian McKeith and the cult of the nonesense-speaking bogus science media 'Nutritionalist') that helps make our society completely science-illiterate.

Well, the subject says it all.. I have insects crawling all over my skin and can't seem to concentrate on anything at all without getting snappy. It's easy to forget you're still a Nicotene addict when you give up cigarettes for gum.. until you have to spend the day without the gum..

Okay.. after *cough* slightly slating Gaggle's performance at last night's gig (also featuring Arrows Of Love!) on Facebook.. I now feel obliged to say that they can't be bad eggs if they're collaborating with the awesome A.Human.

I give you.. the rather excellent A.HUMAN/GAGGLE collaboration 'Bring me the Head of A Human' video directed by Jonathan Entwistle using sets are built entirely from cardboard found in a warehouse in Hackney..

    A metaphor too far? ;)
You'll never really know if you're actually any good if _all_ you do is whistle for Grandma.
Not that you want to stop whistling for Grandma, or that you wouldn't appreciate it if Grandma would come out and see you whistling for strangers. You never know, Grandma may even find she enjoys the trips out now and again. Perhaps Grandma will find that she has more in common with the strangers than she thought.. or maybe she'll have new people to whistle for her.

But, you know how Grandmas like to complain..

SBA @ The Purple Turtle, LONDON. This Thursday..
We're taking the stage for this gig at 9:30pm sharp.

If you'd like to sign up to the £5 cheaplist, or would like to print of the £5 entry flyer then feel free to visit HERE..

Why, when I need to get flyers sorted and do band promo stuff.. when I need to clean up the house and vacuum.. when I need to wash towels, pillow cases and duvet covers..

.. do I completely lack any energy whatsoever on my one free evening this week before the Purple Turtle gig..

More to the point.. why do I suddenly perk up at 12:30am and regain my energy and enthusiasm.. just when it's far too late to make noise and achieve many of these things?

    It's The Thought That Counts
Is That Supposed To Be There?
    A Matter of Scale

See.. a proper LJ updates about gubbins..
Last night I braved the London floods to meet up with [info]cavey_nik for a quick drink at Big Red before heading down to an "exlusive secret Death Cigarettes gig set up for the press" at the Hope And Anchor.
This was actually easier said than done, as London seems to grind to a halt in the rain.. with the roads clogged with loony Taxis and every idiot in the city choosing to try their hands at 'driving'[1] to keep dry. Combine that with torrential rain, poor visibility and the fact that half of London's traffic lights seem to break down in the rain and you've got a recipe for disaster. In my own case, it was thankfully only a recipe for spending 1 hour in weaving chaotic near-static London traffic jams doing a part of my journey home from work that usually takes 10-15 minutes.

Arrived 25 minutes late at Big Red and had a swift drink before heading off early down the road for the gig.. which was lucky as Death Cigarettes were actually supporting that night and were already 2 songs into their set when we arrived.
Our appearance at the gig seemed to genuinely surprise the lead singer of Death Cigarettes, as the gig had been hastily put on their MySpace yesterday and.. between the weather and the lack of advertising.. they weren't expecting anyone would actually turn up to see them.

DC were on good form, showing their quality by putting on a fantastic show regardless of the minimal audience.. which pretty much consisted of their crew, the other bands.. and Nik and myself. There's something quite awkward about being a representative of a minimal audience.. the entire event can feel uncomfortably intimate at times.. and it's even worse for the performers trying to put on an energetic performance to a handfull of people. Nevertheless, DC didn't let that phase them in the slightest and I enjoyed the exclusive experience ;)

The headline band were 3 lads who didn't look much over 16 years old. They proceeded to play music that sounded somewhat like Nirvana. A charismatic bunch of guys who made a splendid big noise and have a lead singer remarkably reminiscent of a young River Phoenix. I don't know what they were called, but I wouldn't be surprised if this band aren't on the main stage at Offset or 1234 Festival in the next couple of years.. the teen girls will love them. It can be slightly humbling watching people so young being so talented and energetic.. it took me 15 years to get to that level as a performer.. but best of luck to the guys.

Post-gig we retired back to Big Red where Nik wisely prevented me from drinking that one drink too many.. sometimes I have no common sense when it comes to going out on a School night. Woke up this morning mostly not-so-bad-for-wear, although I can't seem to shake the feeling that it should be a Friday..

All in all, a splendid (if rather damp) night out!!

Well, it _could_ be loosely referred to as that.. I suppose..

    Am not dedded yet..
Just ran out of internet.. after spending all night catching up on band MySpace messages, comments and making some headway on our friends request list.

Seem to be failing at this LJ updating lark.. but with work and so many accounts/profiles/websites to keep up to date the LJ updating seems to be falling off at the wayside, although I'm still reading.
Intended to review Offset Festival from the weekend before last, and I may still do it if I find the time.. although I'm fairly sure that it's of limited interest to most of my friends list.. and cool hipster bloggers such as [info]nemesis_to_go can be relied on to do a much better job of it than I would.

SBA had a gig at the Purple Turtle fairly recently, which seemed to go pretty well, especially given that I was struggling to hear throughout with a full-on ear infection and a rather bad Patulous Eustacian Tube problem.. although I have yet to find much comment or any photos of the event in question. I have it on good authority the the gig did actually happen and wasn't just a figment of my imagination ;)
Many thanks to all that attended :)

In related news, SBA are playing a (notorious, apparently) Glasswerk gig on the 24th September at The Purple Turtle in Camden.. and we'll be making an appearance supporting Penetration at the Shed in Leicester this Saturday..

Flyer advertising the gig at The Purple Turtle in London on the 24th September, 2009.

Recommended band links of the week:
    The (dubiously named) Death Cigarettes
    The (more dubiously named) Hindleys
.. and, for the Goths out there.. probably the finest live band we've gigged with this year (think Robert Smith rediscovers his Chameleons collection during a killing spree).. Luxury Stranger

I have a bath calling me, it's going "glug, glug, splosh, steam".. so I'd probably best go see what it wants..

Just a note to all that, for some inexplicable reason, I have been almost completely unable to view Yahoo (and several other unrelated sites, including the BBC news site) at work since yesterday.

So if I'm slow answering any emails sent to my Yahoo account.. it's because I can mostly only check them on an evening..

Despite having a stinker of a headache at the moment (which was previously a sore throat early this morning), last night was the first night of uninterrupted sleep for 3 weeks. Here's hoping that's a good sign :)

Still, I've got a Doctors appointment on Thursday to have my 10 allocated minutes in the presence of a medical professional to check out the damage left behind by the ear infection and ask why I'm still feeling thee strange migrating sinus/ear/throat pains (albiet nowhere near in the same league as 2 weeks ago!).

It does appear that I'll have to do this Friday's Purple Turtle gig with only partial hearing.. I shall endeavour to overcome this by over-acting ;)

If you don't believe that bands outside the Goth scene deliver good Goth music, just check out the band listing on the site.. if you don't find something you like.. you're already dead..

Looks like the visit to Big Red is going to be tonight instead.. rumour has it that [info]miss_amethyst and her father will be propping up the pub..

In other news, I'm still deaf as a post, especially in my left ear. I hope my hearing improves enough for me to put on a decent showing at SBA's Purple Turtle gig next Friday.

It's not so much the lack of hearing that's the problem.. it's the increase of my own head-voice and the muffling of sound that is compromising my ability to sing to music properly and judge my own volume levels.

I could also have done with increasing my fitness at bit more before the gig.. my usual efforts have been somewhat stymied by being too ill to focus on exercise and diet like I normally would in preparation for a gig..

Anyway, fingers crossed everything falls together in the last minute.

    London is closed..
Kind of feel like doing something tonight.. but after checking the interweb there appears to be nothing interesting happening in all of London[1]

Maybe I'll just pop out to Big Red on my ownsome for the hell of it later..

I've been rather looking forward to this gig.. and I think a dose of alcohol real-world and great music might be nice.

It's nice to not be in pain, much.
After spending the entire week in various shades of agony and sleep deprivation, with a failed attempt to resume work on Wednesday.. it looks like I'm coming out of the other side of the ear-jaw-throat infection.

Sure, as I write this at work I still keep getting the odd flash of sinus headache.. and I'm still rather deaf in my left ear.. and I'm still on maxmimum doses of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.. but there's that underlying feeling that it's time to rejoin to healthy world again and that things are getting better.

I'd love to go out and celebrate this.. but I'm still not sure how much I should push things. I suppose I should tidy the wreckage of my flat tonight and see how I feel this weekend. Hopefully I'll have got my hearing back in time for the SBA London gig on the 28th..

    Ouchy ouch, pardon?
I seem to have developed an ear infection in my left ear.
This had rendered me half-deaf in that ear and is pretty painful too..

I shall be embarking on my own therapy for this condition tonight.. which will consist largely of paracetamol and the application of loud noise in combination with medicinal quantities of alcohol.

Extensive research has concluded that the best possible location for recovery should be stage-right at the Black Leather Club @ The Victoria tonight.. ;)

Gigs I think I need to go to..
This Thursday looks very tasty indeed.. Death Cigarettes and The Bacchae (an appropriate auditory combination ;))!

Next Sunday I get another dose of the most excellent Death Cigarettes.. this time with some Arrows Of Love in the bargain!
(Although I'm still not sure if I'll be too busy with rehearsal stuff on the day or not..)
    10:37 am
    Artrocker - The Revenge
Artrocker in London is somewhat patchy at the moment.. but I finally managed to track them down at The Buffalo Bar last night. A really enjoyable night, but I forget just how random Artrocker can be.. you never quite know what you're going to get..

Tonight started out in rawk mode.. with Cardiff's Exit International.. a very looud and heavy sound that veered dangerously into the Thrash metal territory at times. Still, a lively and spirited performance with good humour.

Second band on continued the theme with The Orphans from Brighton. Another enjoyable band with a rock sound.. this time reminding me of The Faces crossed with AC/DC.. perhaps not the most apt or entirely flattering comparison, but I couldn't get away from those impressions. Not really my thing but it was nevertheless done well, got the audience moving.. and was all rather enjoyable.

The headliners tonight were a band I hadn't heard of, apparently from my own home turf of York/Leeds.. The Bacchae. They proved to be rather a pleasing revelation.. this band seem to be pitching for some kind of slightly psychedelic territory.. but they are betrayed by their music and pointy Goth boots!
A most excellent show and some rather catchy music.. if you like the Zombina And The Skeletones sound then you'll most likely like this band.

Apparently they're also playing at the Black Leather Club opening in London on Thursday.. methinks I may pop around for another dose :)

The storyline to "The Day After Tomorrow" is utterly foolish..
.. and the backstory makes me want to vomit razorblades..

But it's a big disaster movie with tidal waves and tornadoes.. and I can't bring myself to stop watching it for the XXth time!!

All I need now is for them to follow it with 'Deep Impact' (the title of which still belongs in the porn movie territory, IMO) and I'd be in disaster bliss..

Maybe I'll dig out my VHS tape of "Meteor" instead..

But you can still keep your utterly rubbish 'Amageddon'! ;)
