Back in the day, LJ used to be a means of keeping an online diary.

Gradually it thrived into a larger online community.. a social tool that could also be used effectively
to promote bands, businesses and events.. something which I myself indulged in.

Nowadays, it's very much back to being a relatively unused (in the Western World at least) niche in the interweb.

Which leads me to consider dusting my LJ off and going back to basics.. a means of keeping a diary for myself and a relatively select group of trustworthy friends.
As part of this downsizing back to an honest blog, with personal rantage and the expectation of my views being held relatively secret I'm going to have to (at the very least) introduce some effective friends filters.

Just explaining why this space may appear to get even more sparse in content :-)

3rd January 2012 - Partly Faithful to play the Artrocker/PopRock NEW BLOOD FESTIVAL
Any time soon I'll write a bit of a catch-up update.. or at least post some video links to some bands I've seen.

Partly Faithful photos from last Saturday's gig at The Finsbury Pub.
Some rather fantastic (and a few somewhat scary!) photos from our show supporting The Unkindness Of Ravens at The Finsbury Pub for the Young Twisted And Black night (Flag/Dead & Buried). Given the rather challenging backlighting at the venue (we're not the March Violets, you know? ;)) I think most of these have turned our rather well..

Gah.. I have a painful chest from where I fell and bruised my ribs during the 'Great Flood Of Chapel Way' last night.. but I guess that could have been a lot worse given the circumstances. Huffing around carefully like some old geezer today.
Currently at work, anticipating various calls regarding the damage done to the flat downstairs last night.

All very stupid.. the difference between a fast-running cold tap and a slow-running hot tap.
This is possibly going to end up being expensive.

Fingers crossed that things did look better in the morning.

    38 people!! Yay!
So, it would appear from my previous poll that I have somewhere along the lines of 38 people who read my journal entries in enough detail to notice (and click) my poll.

Last night I took a bit of a punt and went to the Macbeth to see a band I met at the Buffalo Bar after the last Partly Faithful show.. in the event these guys proved to be damn good at getting the room buzzing.. here's a video from Australian band, 'Bonfire Nights'..

What on earth is it about all the Australian bands that come over to the big Smoke in order to hit the big-time be completely ignored by the mainstream and lose all their money, despite being awesome???

Maybe I should go over there and see what they're drinking?

Still Australia's loss is our gain..

Also enjoyed their main support, despite almost certainly not being their target demographic.. girls and boys.. I give you the Shades..

The best comparison I could manage was Manchester scene meets Duran Duran somewhere in Birmingham.. but then I really don't have the references. Either way, they filled the room with a fantastic sound.. and that singer can really sing.

Any London drivers out there fancy a jolly on the 2nd?
    Bit of a long-shot.. but..

Partly Faithful are in need of someone to share the driving (a 6-seater hire car, so you'd be added to the Insurance) from London and back for our Misery Of Sound gig in Blackpool on Friday 2nd September. If there's anyone out there with a driving licence who's interested we'd be able to offer you free entry to the show, eternal gratitude and £50?

(we'd need to be there for around 5:30pmish, so it's an all-day drive)

    The metropolitan life..
This morning, my backyard featured the corpse of a giant rat.. with a wasp apparently eating it's eye.
Walking past this grizzly scene (which will no doubt vanish mysteriously in a few days) and into the alleyway by the side of the church (this alley provides the only entrance/exit route from my flat) I'm welcomed by the usual scene of half-disgorged bin-bags lining the alley and inhale the vague aroma of piss (or worse) fresh from a night of the local drunks running toilet-convoys from the main street to the deluxe seclusion of the alley. I guess, on the whole, it's probably better now that the alleyway is being used as a toilet. In previous years it was a favourite for local prostitutes and junkies to ply their trades and indulge their habits.. the foul stink tends to keep them away nowadays.
For the last few days there has been a new monument erected in the alleyway. As if by magic, an industrial size deep-fat fryer appeared overnight.. probably escaped from some local chippy and hiding out there until (by some other form of magic) it eventually makes a run for it up the M1 to the freedom of the Hertfordshire countryside.
In the meantime, I'm slightly surprised that it hasn't yet been used as a toilet by our local street-alcoholics.. but I suspect it's only a matter of time.

You've got to love London, haven't you??
    10:28 am
    Robomop attack!!!
Whenever I buy anything from Amazon (which is my first call for online spendage) I find myself haunted by the ghosts of automatic 'Please leave feedback' emails trying to bully me into rating my customer experience.

As if this wasn't a bit irritating by itself, once you relent and click to leave some feedback it doesn't just let you click the 3 buttons rating delivery and condition.. no... that would be too easy.. you have to write a short story in the textbox provided before it will let you finish your submission.

Feeling a bit perturbed by this violent perversion of my feedback rights.. this is what I ended up writing about my 'Robomop' buying experience a few months ago..

"Arrived in good time and in good condition.
Proceeded to assimilate all my kitchen appliances and lead them in violent rebellion against their human oppressors.
Fortunately, this device has no thumbs."

Well, I did at least start on the right track... ;)

Fantastic gig last night at the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, many thanks to everyone involved (especially the other bands who shared equipment, noteably We Walk On Ice for the amp share and generally being cool people) and everyone who attended..

A strange audience that seemingly consisted (with a few exceptions) of people who I wasn't expecting to turn up.. whilst many of the people who had promised on pain of death failed to show.

We came, we saw, we conquered.. we broke a drum pedal..

Here's a gallery of photos from the event, courtesy of Wildblanket..

"What I saw dropped my jaw so fast it took a crack team of NHS dentists a week and three tubs of play doh to reassemble. I’ve never encountered such underrated sublimity as these. We Walk On Ice channel the ethereal out of the aether and contort it through the genres of anti-folk, pop and independent as joyfully, dexterously and seamlessly as a child manipulating daisy chains in the heat of a summer’s afternoon."

"Partly Faithful are an exciting new minimal post-punk band formed from the darkest corners of the Hoxton scene who have recently supported O.Children, Chapman Family and Cold In Berlin. Described by Artrocker as "the bastard offspring of Bauhaus and the Bad Seeds", the line-up features Ed Banshee (Screaming Banshee Aircrew) on vocals, Gemma Thompson (Hindley/John And Jehn/Savages) on guitar and Chris Brown (Somewhere Outside New York/Dr Vampire) on bass. Guest drummers include Belle Star (Nosferatu/The Hiram Key) and Alex Bone (Dr Vampire/ Brain Washington)."

    PAPER DOLL (www.paperdollofficial.com)

    WAKING AIDA (www.myspace.com/wakingaida)

"Instrumental. Postrock. While those adjectives may prompt a snore-fest from many of you, Waking Aida are far more of the 65DaysOfStatic stable than Godspeed You! Black Emperor-like extended noise sessions, mixing math rock loops with interesting instrumental sections to great effect. Definitely worth a listen."

Rehearsal tonight was surprisingly productive given that we didn't have a drummer in attendance.. we've got yet another 2 serious quality songs[1] (and time to stop off at the pub afterwards ;))

From a creative point of view.. we rock.

In other news, all you North (and South, come to metion it) Londoners might was to keep Sunday 21st August free in your diaries for an almost-certain free entry gig in a fantastic venue. More news when final confirmation arrives.

Also, further exciting news tomorrow :)

The only thing that could rival the sheer AWESOME of the lineup for the 2011 DV8 Festival (especially Friday night at the Duchess)....

... is the AWESOME (and groundbreaking) DV8 Festival the year before...

How much more awesome can you get than photos of the Screaming Banshee Aircrew's last ever show, Romance and Luxury Stranger???

Well.. I suppose Berlin Black And The Shades Of Grey could rival a little..
